Don Khon
This marks the remnants of the only railway ever attempted in Lao PDR. Built by the French on Don Khon island, it ceased operation in 1945. The railway bridge still connects the island of Don Khon to the larger island of Don Det. The islands dot the Mekong, on the border with Cambodia, and are part of what is known as the Si Phan Don (the 4,000 islands). If you're lucky, a boat trip just a little futher south will allow a glimpse of the rare Irrawaddy freshwater dolphin, which is now an endangered species. Only about a hundred are thought to survive. This marks my submission to Theme Thursday's "ego" theme.
