Li-Ting
Two days ago I rented The Veritcal Ray of the Sun, and finally was formally introduced to Mark Lee's cinematography. He has also shot many of Hou Hsiao-Hsien films, as well as Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love. Vertical Ray, like Anh Hung Tran's earlier film Scent of Green Papaya is shot in vivid, saturated color. Which brings us to this photograph.
I took this outside of a Cajun restaurant down the street from Five Points. We had originally planned on meeting for brunch at the latter, but it was booked. It was the first time I had seen Li-Ting since her return from Japan. The wasn't a cloud in the sky and the sunlight was almost oppressive, so clear were its rays.
