A man played an acoustic guitar on the subway platform at Union Square. He sang "Back on the Chain Gang" and "Sledgehammer." He sang "Killing Me Softly." At one point he sang "New York State of Mind." When he finished he said, "especially tonight because the accordian guy isn't here." He laughed and said, "Shhhh. Don't tell him I said that." I laughed along with him.

This morning snow lay over the cars on Thompson Street. It wasn't enough to cover them; glass and metal shone through a thin layer of what appeared to be feathered cornflakes. Hands had run over some of the hoods leaving arcs of metal uncovered. There were no snowballs to be found. The ground was wet. Puddles collected on the sidewalk. The air was relatively warm.
